RIP: Manitoba Trucking Legend Paul Albrechtsen

Paul Albrechtsen, founder of Winnipeg trucking company Paul’s Hauling, passed away peacefully on July 7 at the age of 88, with his wife Mary Lou by his side.

A trucking industry pioneer, Albrechtsen worked in the transportation industry his whole life, starting with raising horses in his native Denmark. Arriving in Canada in 1954 with just $50 in his pocket, he saved to buy his first truck and started his first trucking company, Paul’s Hauling,in 1957 in Brandon, Man. Two years later, the company had a fleet of eight trucks, hauling crude oil and salt water for the petroleum industry. Today the company is one of the leading bulk transport services in western Canada and one of the most respected fleets in the country.

A prominent philanthropist, Albrechtsen donated to several causes over his life. He donated $13.4 million to the Health Sciences Centre Foundation and $7 million to St. Boniface over the past 30 years. He also gave $8 million to the Reh-Fit Centre in 2006.

Albrechtsen was also named a Member of the Order of Canada in 2018, the highest distinction in Canada’s honours system.

Paul is survived by his wife, his six children and their families. A Celebration of Life will take place on Wednesday, July 17, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the RBC Convention Centre, Winnipeg, MB.
