Statistics Canada is launching the Trucking Statistics Program, a new initiative designed to address critical data gaps in Canada’s trucking industry and support evidence-based transportation policy development.
The program will provide valuable industry insights to government organizations, including the Council of Ministers Responsible for Transportation and Highway Safety, as they work to improve freight transportation systems and reduce interprovincial/territorial trade barriers across Canada.
As part of the survey, participating carriers may be asked to provide bills of lading to collect data on:
- Commodity types
- Shipment weights
- Origin and destination of the shipment
- Other freight movement data
The Statistics Act prohibits Statistics Canada from releasing any information that could be used to identify an individual, business or agricultural operation. All information collected will remain strictly confidential and will be used solely for statistical and research purposes. Additional details regarding data protection and privacy are available through Statistics Canada’s Trust Centre.
Timeline
- June 18: Physical letters outlining the program will be mailed to approximately 1,900 carriers.
- July: Statistics Canada representatives will contact carriers to verify business contact information.
- September 1, 2026 – December 31, 2026: Survey data collection period.
The Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) encourages members selected for participation to review the program materials and participate in the program as Statistics Canada works to build a more comprehensive understanding of Canada’s trucking industry.
