It is with deep sorrow that the family of Derek Varley announces his passing at the age of 62. Derek passed away peacefully after a brief battle with cancer. He was surrounded by loved ones.

Derek was director of Fleet Operations for Premier Bulk Systems Ltd. He became part of OTA’s Pioneer Club Member in 2023 for 25 years of service to the industry.

Derek’s family says he was admired by family and friends for his strength, determination and his sense of humor. His charisma and generosity brought light into the lives of all who knew him. He was witty and bursting with knowledge gained through all his life experiences and achievements.

His legacy and spirit will be cherished and kept alive through his loving family: his mom, Susan Brown and his stepdad Brian Brown; his brother Daryl (Jeannie) Varley and his sister Anita Varley; his nephews Jordan (Angelyn), Mitch and Joshua; and his great nephews Ethan, Justin and Jaylean. Derek will also be remembered by his many beloved friends, colleagues, neighbours, aunts, uncles and cousins. Derek was predeceased by his dad Gordon Varley.

A love of playing with trucks in the sandbox at an early age would eventually become his reality with a lifelong career in the transport industry. From driving to logistics management, he covered all bases. His career highlight was organizing and joining in on Harley Davidson bike tours across north America, which were some of Derek’s most precious memories. The friendships he created with colleagues throughout his career meant the world to him.

Derek spent precious time in the last couple of months celebrating his life with those who loved him most. The family will be honoring his wishes by not holding a memorial. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to any children’s charity, which would have meant so much to Derek.

“Derek is now free from pain and suffering, peacefully relaxing on the dock at the lake with a paloma cocktail in hand,” his family wrote. “Rest in peace, Derek. You will always be loved, always be missed and forever be remembered.”
