OTA Pres to South Asian Community: ‘We’re Here to Listen’

OTA President Stephen Laskowski was recently invited to the Mississauga studios of Y Media Group, the largest South Asian-Canadian media outlet in Canada, to speak with Group Editor, Yudhvir Jaswal, on a host of issues affecting the trucking industry, particularly in the South Asian community.

Among the many topics covered, Laskowski discussed ways to strengthen relations between the OTA and the vibrant South Asian transportation community; how OTA and the South Asian community can continue to work together to bring about necessary change – like the successful changes to the air brake endorsement system, which brought in more flexible online learning modules for drivers – as well as other safety issues related to training, licensing and Northern Ontario highways.

A central part of the discussion also covered the growing trend of driver  misclassification and ensuring drivers who are employees are not mistreated and denied their legal entitlements like CPP, 10 mandatory sick days, vacation pay and other benefits and labour protections.

“OTA is here to say that if you are a driver who is not being treated right, if this is happening to you, we are here to help. This must end.”

The interview was broadcasted on Y Media’s television stations and social media channels. See the full interview here:
