Interstate 94 near Kalamazoo, Michigan is closed indefinitely in both directions after a pileup this morning involving roughly 150 vehicles. The crash includes several commercial trucks, including a tractor-trailer carrying fireworks, which ignited.

The “chaotic” multiple vehicle crash completely shut down the I-94 between Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. There is at least one reported fatality – a Canadian truck driver from Ottawa.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, the I-94 at Michigan Avenue, exit 88, is being detoured onto Sprinkle Road, exit 80.

White out conditions and severe winter weather are being blamed for the cause of the crash.

Police say the highway will remain closed for the rest of the evening and will likely not reopen at least until after midnight.

Meanwhile, parts of the New York State Thruway remain closed after winter weather hit western New York State last night and early this morning. Local media reports that there are continued traffic problems in areas south of Buffalo and throughout the western part of the state.

The I-90 remains closed in both directions between exits 53 (Downtown Buffalo – Canada – I-190) and 61 (Ripley – Shortman Road). The I-190 southbound ramp to westbound I-90 remains closed.

Opened earlier today were the I-90 is open in both directions between exits 46 (Rochester – Corning – I-390) and 53 (Downtown Buffalo – Canada – I-190). The I-190 is open in both directions with the exception of exit 7 (Skyway – NY Route 5).
