The Speedsville Road bridge over Highway 401 between Kitchener and Cambridge will close on Monday May 12, and will be torn down a week later. As part of preparations to widen a stretch of Hwy 401 to 10 lanes, the five-decade old bridge will be replaced with a longer span later this summer.
As a result of the demolition work, all lanes of Hwy 401 will be closed to traffic on Saturday night, beginning at 10 p.m. until 7 a.m. Sunday. Highway 8 between the 401 and Sportsworld Drive will also close for the night.
Traffic will detour off Highway 401 at Hespeler Road and King Street. Sportsworld and Maple Grove Road will be used for the overnight route around demolition.
The new bridge, expected to be completed by the fall, will be two lanes wide, but built for easy widening to four lanes in the future. According to local news, the Fountain Street North bridge over the 401 will be razed and replaced next year as well.
