Cargo Crime Reporting Tool Update

Usage of the online cargo crime reporting program, developed by the Insurance Bureau of Canada and the Canadian Trucking Alliance, appears to be growing among insurers and police.

For instance, officials partly credit the reporting system with last month’s recovery of $1.4 million in stolen cargo in York Region, Ont. Police said the majority of the property has been identified and returned to the owners with the help of the cargo theft reporting database.

However, participation from the carrier community, including carrier members, could use a boost. Without more carriers using the system, the ability to identify and recover stolen cargo will remain limited.

The industry is encouraged to show more involvement to ensure the ongoing battle against cargo crime is taken seriously by law enforcement and government decision makers. CTA is asking members to utilize and promote the online reporting system.
