Update on MTO Extended Length Semi-Trailer Trial

MTO’s limited trial of extended length semi-trailers (60 foot semi-trailers) has been operating since February 2013.   Below is an overview of the trial program to date:

  • 2 carriers participating (each in partnership with a retail organization) with a total of 62,667 km travelled.
    • 31,099 (50%) km travelled with empty trailers
    • 31,568 (50%) km travelled with loaded trailers
  • 338 trips completed
    • 191 trips with empty trailers
    • 147 trips with loaded trailers
  • Average trip length is 185 km.
  • Monthly trips range from 24 to 31 trips.
  • There are eight origins-destinations locations for this trial: (2 in Mississauga; 1 in Belleville; 3 in Toronto; 1 in Ajax: 1 in Ottawa)
  • Primary routes for this trial are between the GTA and Eastern Ontario
  • No accidents or traffic infractions have been reported.

MTO is expected to continue to operate the trial until there is sufficient data to determine if an extended length semi-trailer program is sustainable.  OTA will continue to provide updates on this issue for the membership as developments occur.
