MTO’s limited trial of extended length semi-trailers (60 foot semi-trailers) has been operating since February 2013. Below is an overview of the trial program to date:
- 2 carriers participating (each in partnership with a retail organization) with a total of 62,667 km travelled.
- 31,099 (50%) km travelled with empty trailers
- 31,568 (50%) km travelled with loaded trailers
- 338 trips completed
- 191 trips with empty trailers
- 147 trips with loaded trailers
- Average trip length is 185 km.
- Monthly trips range from 24 to 31 trips.
- There are eight origins-destinations locations for this trial: (2 in Mississauga; 1 in Belleville; 3 in Toronto; 1 in Ajax: 1 in Ottawa)
- Primary routes for this trial are between the GTA and Eastern Ontario
- No accidents or traffic infractions have been reported.
MTO is expected to continue to operate the trial until there is sufficient data to determine if an extended length semi-trailer program is sustainable. OTA will continue to provide updates on this issue for the membership as developments occur.
