Reminder on Canadian Exemption for US Tank Endorsement

Share

On occasion, Canadian carriers and drivers are asked by US shippers to show a Tank Endorsement on their licence before being loaded. While this is a requirement for American drivers operating in the US, Canadian drivers are not required to have this.

This is rooted in FMCSR 383.23 and Canada – United States driver license reciprocity. However, please remember that Canadian drivers do need to possess a Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) training certificate when transporting hazardous materials (HM) in a tank in the United States.

If you find yourself in this situation where your US customers are unsure of the requirements, it may be helpful to reference or direct them to FMCSA’s website where this question is dealt with and answered directly.
