OTA Statement on Blockades Impacting Ontario’s Commercial Vehicle Inspection Stations

The Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) has been the voice of the Ontario trucking industry since 1926. OTA believes that the industry’s concerns should be voiced in a responsible and professional manner that does not risk or threaten public safety.

Ontario’s Commercial Vehicle Inspection Stations (CVIS) play an important role in keeping Ontario’s roads safe. Targeting these locations and disrupting their operations to express displeasure over government polices is an action OTA strongly disagrees with.

It is OTA’s understanding that the trucking firms protesting at the various CVIS locations today are raising concerns regarding a trucking policy that regulates how trucks are built and operate on public highways – known as SPIF (Safe, Productive and Infrastructure Friendly). The Government of Ontario has actively engaged the Ontario trucking industry for over 20 years on this matter with multiple segments of the trucking industry already in compliance with the policy. To be in compliance with SPIF, all sizes trucking companies have invested billions in new equipment that better protects Ontario’s road infrastructure and improves vehicle safety.

The Government of Ontario, before and throughout the pandemic, has collaboratively engaged the trucking industry on all truck policy issues. OTA would strongly encourage the operators impeding the ability of MTO officers from conducting their important work at CVIS locations to withdraw their vehicles from obstructing operations. OTA stands ready to work with the Government of Ontario and all members of the trucking industry to ensure Ontario’s trucking industry is competitive and safe.
