The Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) is highlighting the commercial trucking industry’s strong anticipation for the operational launch of the Gordie Howe International Bridge. With bridge officials continuing to project a Spring 2026 opening, the OTA emphasizes the new corridor cannot open soon enough for carriers currently navigating economic headwinds and escalating operational costs at the Windsor-Detroit corridor.
Cross-border operators are facing substantial financial pressure due to toll pricing costs. OTA members report these compounding expenses are translating into $20,000 to over $100,000 extra per month, per fleet, just to maintain standard shipping schedules. Opening the new crossing on schedule is widely viewed by the industry as a vital mechanism to ease these intense overhead pressures.
OTA is encouraged that the WDBA has reaffirmed its commitment to a spring opening, a move that will bring increased capacity, improved freight movement, and greater supply chain resilience, benefiting carriers, shippers, and the broader economy on both sides of the border.
“The Gordie Howe International Bridge represents an incredibly important milestone for North-South trade facilitation,” said Lak Shoan, Director of Policy for the OTA. “This corridor is a vital economic artery for thousands of commercial vehicles delivering essential goods daily. Our members simply cannot wait for the bridge to open, as it will bring much-needed, immediate operational and toll relief to carriers who are currently absorbing high border-crossing premiums.”
The OTA has consistently collaborated with the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) to ensure commercial operations have been tested, are optimized for driver efficiency, and advanced customs processing. The launch of commercial vehicle toll accounts, such as the Breakaway toll account system, will offer discounted per-axle rates that fleets are eager to utilize.
As construction nears completion and final commissioning activities continue, Ontario’s trucking industry stands ready to begin using the new span as soon as it officially opens to commercial traffic.
