New Peel Region Paper Advocates for Improved Border Crossings

Peel Region has recently released a new discussion paper, which is part of the Region’s work on Goods Movement.

The report highlights the importance of trade to the Ontario economy, and the role transportation plays. The report also pays particular attention to the role of trucking as trucks carry more Ontario trade (by value) than all other modes combined. The paper goes on to highlight specific issues with crossing the border, issues associated with travelling between the GTHA and the border, and a number of broader issues facing cross-border trade.

For trucking the key issue discussed is the unreliability of travel times, congestion and the lack of resilience in the highway network linking Peel Region with Michigan and Niagara border-crossings. In turn, a number of action items are identified including many which have long been voiced by OTA, including completing the proposed New International Trade Crossing, and support for RFID technology.
