The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced restrictions for hauling of Class 3 and 8 dangerous goods at the Ambassador Bridge Windsor/Detroit, will be removed effective October 29, 2024. Under the new rules, the restricted materials will only be allowed to be transported across the bridge during off-peak hours and under the supervision of vehicle escorts.
The decision comes after multiple requests by the Ambassador Bridge to remove these longstanding restrictions, the completion of a technical study by MDOT, and months of consultations with various stakeholders, including the OTA, which supported the removal of all restrictions on Class 3 and 8 dangerous goods, with the goal of aligning the policy with all major ports of entry at the Canada-U.S. border.
Representatives from the Ambassador Bridge have indicated that their website will be updated with information outlining this new process in the coming days, and that any additional questions or feedback can be submitted to the bridge for follow-up.
OTA will continue to provide additional details of these changes and the new process as they become available.
