As an organization always looking for new ways to support truck drivers, OTA has been asked to highlight to members Drivers Matter, an organization that looks to support truck drivers “with unseen and undiscussed challenges they face, the isolation that comes with spending long periods on the road away from their families.”
Drivers Matter is an organization that offers support to commercial truck drivers while they are alone on the road. They have chaplains stationed at seven truck stops across Canada as well as trained volunteers that operate a 24/7 confidential support line. While Drivers Matter is a Christian organization their services are not solely faith based, they provide support to drivers of any faith along with their families. Whether you wish to discuss your faith or just need someone to talk to, Drivers Matter is an excellent resource.
Here’s how the organization says it came to be:
“A single moment can change a life forever. This was true for a young truck driver whose routine overnight shift took a tragic turn just after 3:00 a.m. when a person intentionally stepped into the path of his truck. The investigation confirmed he was not at fault, and there was nothing he could have done to prevent the tragedy. Yet, despite knowing this, he struggled with the emotional weight of what had happened.
After taking time away from work, he eventually returned to driving. While he remained confident in his professional skills, he found the quiet hours of the night especially difficult. During the day, traffic, customers, and the demands of the job kept his mind occupied. But in the darkness of the early morning, memories of the incident resurfaced. Every shadow along the highway and every overpass reminded him of that night, causing him to relive the experience over and over again.
The isolation of long-haul trucking made coping even harder. At 3:00 a.m., there was no one to call. Dispatch was busy, and most people were asleep. During this difficult period, he connected with Transport For Christ, where chaplains provided compassionate support through late-night phone conversations. Their willingness to listen helped him continue driving when he felt ready to give up.
His experience inspired an important question: who is available to support professional drivers during the lonely hours when crises often feel most overwhelming? That question led to the creation of the Drivers Matter Helpline and the Never Alone initiative.
Today, Drivers Matter offers confidential, 24/7 support for professional drivers and their families across Canada. Staffed by trained volunteers and chaplains who understand the realities of life on the road, the service provides a caring, non-judgmental ear whenever it is needed. The mission is simple: no driver or family member should have to face life’s challenges alone. Sometimes, the greatest source of hope is simply knowing someone is there to listen.
