CTA was recently asked to submit comments to the Regulatory Reconciliation and Cooperation Table (RCT), a forum established by the Canadian Free Trade Agreement to reconcile regulatory measures that act as a barrier to trade. In recent months the RCT has done work on regulatory alignment on ELDs and Wide Single Tires and had asked CTA to submit some additional items for consideration for the group’s workplan for 2019 and beyond.
In the submission, CTA included a number of additional items that we believe should warrant further consideration regarding regulatory reconciliation and cooperation moving forward. These items cover categories such as truck safety, the use of facility insurance, carrier oversight, and labour standards are aimed at not only improving productivity in our sector, but also creating a level playing field in the process.
In response, the RCT recognized the complexity and importance of these issues, and believed that working through already established transportation groups, such as the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA), would likely be the best venue to address these issues moving forward. CTA staff looks forward to working with RCT and CCMTA in aligning regulatory differences in these areas moving forward.
