The bridge’s core purpose remains unchanged: it is an indispensable economic lifeline specifically engineered to seamlessly connect and grow two of the world’s most integrated trade markets.
We must never lose sight of why this bridge was built. This world-class infrastructure was designed with a clear, singular vision: to mutually expand Ontario’s provincial export markets and those of our neighbouring U.S. states. For generations, the economic relationship between Ontario and the U.S. has flourished through practical, business-focused cooperation that builds prosperity for workers on both sides of the border.
For Ontario’s trucking industry and the thousands of provincial exporters who rely on us, this new crossing provides critical capacity, eliminates systemic bottlenecks at the Windsor-Detroit gateway, and ensures a more resilient supply chain. From automotive components and advanced manufacturing to agricultural goods, this bridge directly secures the competitive edge of Ontario businesses while opening new avenues for commercial growth.
However, the current trade dispute and the threat of new 50-percent tariffs directly jeopardize these historic infrastructure investments and threaten to inflict severe collateral damage. Trade barriers of this magnitude would be devastating to both Ontario exporters sending goods south and the numerous U.S. states that rely heavily on exporting their products into Ontario. These tariffs would artificially increase freight costs, trigger border congestion, disrupt tightly integrated supply chains, and ultimately raise prices for consumers and businesses alike.
Abrupt policy shifts and ongoing trade uncertainty directly undermine the foundational goal of this cross-border gateway. The OTA strongly urges both governments to protect our shared economic interests, pursue an immediate negotiated solution, and resolve current trade disputes through the dispute settlement mechanisms established under the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). A stable, predictable, and rules-based trading framework under CUSMA is the only path forward to ensure our mutual export markets continue to thrive.
